A
number of articles in this section cover the introduction and
spread of slavery below the Mason-Dixon line and the gradual
outlawing of slavery north of that line. Others address the
American Revolution, which brought independence and the
proclamation that “all men are created equal” (except black
slaves, who were counted as three-fifths of a person, according to
the Constitution). Still others describe Jacksonian democracy,
abolitionism in the North, and the turmoil of the 1850s (Bleeding
Kansas, John Brown’s Raid) that preceded the war itself. |
